Photoshop Video Contest: Entry #1
November 2, 2009 in Contest, Lightroom, Personal, Photography, Photoshop, Tutorials, Video, Workflow
As you will notice, I’ve begun making a few changes around here. Most notably with the layout. Every 6-9 months I like to freshen things up a bit and give the site a little face lift and since my last redesign was in March, I felt that it was due. There are still some bugs to work out as I get used to this new system, so please bear with me.
Now that NAPP‘s So You Think You Can Teach Photoshop?! contest is closed and the judging is soon to be under way, I thought I would share my entries with you.
This first video shares with you how to create a similar effect to what Gordon McGregor of the blog Photo Expressions produced in his shot “A Capitol Idea” that I’ve posted about before. It’s designed for advanced beginners to intermediate users who want to know more about creative uses of masks and who are looking for different ideas for how to present familiar subjects in new ways.

Could you have done the Lightroom steps in Bridge? That way if someone doesn’t have Lightroom, they can still use your tutorial.
Yes and no… You can’t create virtual copies or increment the EV the same way in Bridge as you can Lightroom. However, you can open your image in Camera Raw from Bridge, adjust your exposure, and while holding your Option/Alt key you can open it as a copy in Photoshop. Then just go back into bridge and repeat using different exposure settings.
To assemble the different versions of the files into a single PSD go to File>Scripts>Load Files Into Stack and choose “Add Open Files” and “Attempt to Automatically Align Source Images” and you should be good to go. It’s not as straight-forward, but it will get the job done.
