Photographic Inspiration: What Does It For You?

March 29, 2010 in Inspiration, Photography

The initial content of this post isn’t going to be very long, but I hope your contributions will help us all tap back into those things which first compelled us to pick up our cameras.

I’d like to invite each and every one of you to take a moment on this Monday to remember your beginnings as photographers. What got you into it? Who gave you your first camera and what did that mean to you at the time? What keeps you coming back to photography? How has this art form impacted your life? Where do you find your inspiration?

One of the things that often inspires me is to hear the stories of others, especially when they are talking about their passions. So, if you would, share your stories in the comments below. Everyone has something to offer and even if you may not think so, you will be an inspiration too! It will be a great way to start off your week!

Happy New Year!

From Whence Does It Come?

September 8, 2009 in Inspiration, Personal, Photography

Inspiration is a fickle force.

I go through periods of time when I am driven to make images and do my thing. I can see so clearly and the motivation is so strong and I feel so creatively alive.

Then there are those times when I don’t pick up my camera for weeks other than for the day job. I’ve taken maybe 5 shots in the last couple of weeks. They were employee mug shots so we could check off a box for our PCI compliance that we have all of our employees’ photos posted. And believe me, with the run and gun pace we had to do it, there was certainly no art to it at all.

It’s times like those – times like these – when I don’t really feel all that creative. I can’t find my muse and everything I do either starts looking the same or just doesn’t feel right.

I’m never sure how to get myself out of the rut. I look at other photographers’ work, which often makes me feel inferior. I try to think up little projects for myself – finding circles, or the color yellow, or something like that – but it sometimes feels forced. It’s so frustrating!

What do you do to pull your creative self out of moth balls? Where do you turn to get back into it?

Versailles Planet

Versailles Planet

I was searching for some photographic inspiration  because I’ve been feeling a little designer’s block or photographer’s block, or whatever you call it. Then I remembered a post I wrote awhile back about creating photographic planets based on a panoramic shot I made in Rochester, NY in November 2007. So, I thought I’d give it another go.

Full instructions can be found in the panoramic planets post but I basically found a landscape shot from Kim’s and my trip to Versailles last year and followed the steps outlined there. I had to do some cloning to take care of the seam and, after masking out the sky I added an inner shadow to the planet to give it some more dimensionality – and to clean up some of the fringe left over when masking the sky.

In the end, I think it turned out pretty cool. I want to try it a few more times with buildings and things sticking out into the sky – I have an Eiffel Tower shot I think would work well – for some added interest.

Give it a try and, if you come up with something good, leave a link in the comments or email it to me at reviews@jasondmoore.com and I’ll post a collection of them here.

Interview Me

June 25, 2009 in Photo Review, Photography, Photoshop, Photoshop Interview, Review

For the next edition of the Photoshop Interviews series I thought I would do something different.

I get asked a lot of questions by readers about me, my process, where I get inspiration, how to do this or that, and countless other things. So, instead of doing it on an individual basis I thought I would open it up to everyone to submit questions so that I could respond to everyone in the form of an interview.

Send in your questions either in the comments below or by emailing me by the end of the day tomorrow (Friday) and I’ll respond in Monday’s post. I will determine which questions are most relevant and moderate any duplicate questions.

I’m also thinking of expanding this idea into a regular series along the lines of an “Ask Jason” column where you can send in your Photoshop/Photography/Design/Whatever questions and I’ll answer them each week or so. Let me know what you think of that idea and if you have any questions that you would like to ask as part of that series.

Also, while I have you here, I just want to remind you that I am still accepting submissions for Photo Reviews. If you have a shot you would like me to look at and provide a critique, please check out my photo reviews post for complete info!

The lines are open! Let the inquisition begin!
