Guest Post: Get Up Earlier by Jessica Sweeney

March 10, 2010 in Guest Blogger, Inspiration, Photography

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I’m not a morning person. That you have to shout to get me to even open my eyes, and that I move kind of slowly any time before 10 am.

Let’s put it this way: I don’t think I’d be gainfully employed if coffee had never been invented.

But I think we all know that the edges of the day are best for photography, because the light is just pretty blah any time else. This is news you have probably heard before, but if you’re like me, maybe you haven’t been listening really well. For a while, I relied on the fact that there are two edges in every day. So what if I missed dawn? There was always dusk to fall back on. Same pretty light, but none of the soul-shattering pain that comes with waking up before 6 am. It seemed like a pretty easy call.

But I was wrong.

Dawn is better, and I will tell you why. First, I’m not the only person who’s allergic to waking up early. Most other people are too. So that means if you do make the trek out of bed, you’ve got the place to yourself. You don’t have to shoot over anyone’s shoulder. Or plan to Photoshop them out later. This is particularly nice in areas that are usually heavily trafficked, or overrun with tourists.

Second, dawn is calmer. Lakes or ponds will be glassier, with fewer ripples. You’ll get more morning mist. More drops of dew clinging to leaves and petals. And maybe some more wildlife that hasn’t been scared into hiding by the racket we bipedals make.

I woke up for dawn last weekend, and it was amazing. Magical. An hour or two of shooting and I had four or five new favorite images, plus the rest of the day ahead of me. Then I ate some delicious brunch, and pretty much could have died happy right then and there.

I recommend you try it.

Below, some more shots from last weekend:

Life Happens

December 31, 2007 in Personal

I had every intention of writing up a year in review post for today with my favorite posts from the members of the blogroll. But, as it tends to do, life happened and my mother-in-law is in the hospital. So Kim and I drove down to be with the family. She’s been having tests and will be in for a procedure sometime this morning. We hope to have her home by New Years Day.

UPDATE: Everything went well this morning and the plan is to send her home tomorrow. For now, it’s just laying flat for a few more hours and resting. Thank you to everyone who has sent messages for good health.

Kenya: Day 2

October 28, 2002 in Personal, Semester at Sea

Today was amazing! I was semi-conscious around quarter to 9 this morning when an anouncement was made over the PA system that anyone who was deserted was to report to Purser’s Square (a central meeting place on the ship) to meet Lloyd – our executive dean. Now, my closest friends had left the first morning for their week-long safaris to Tanzania and so I really didn’t have anyone to hang out with. I was planning on spending some time with Lloyd at some point anyway so I rushed to get dressed and I went down to meet him. It turned out that one of the girls on the ship wasn’t going on a safari at all and he decided that he would rent a driver and safari van from our tour company and take her on a game drive through a game reserve. It turned out to be one of the famous “Lloyd Trips” that are so much fun. And then he invited the rest of us along (there were 8 of us total including the driver). So off we went on our own mini-safari! He ended paying for our entry fee (not cheap) and a light lunch at the lodge over-looking a watering hole where the occasional animal could be spotted. When all was said and done we saw 6 giraffes, 5 elephants (including a bull elephant that was ready to charge the van if we got any closer), a herd of water buffalo, some eagles, and a bunch of antelopes here and there. It was a great time!

After our return I went out to the vendors that camp out at the ship and did some business. I bought some things to add to my collection of cups/bowls and utensils from every country and I traded my hat for a drum. All in all I was quite successful. I’m really enjoying Africa; and there’s still so much left to do!

First Day on the Pacific

September 1, 2002 in Personal, Semester at Sea

Still trying to get acclimated to the time difference from home, I found myself wide awake at 6am. The ship was nearly silent apart from the wind and the waves. The night before, the line between sky and sea was gone. Blackness surrounded us with only the white caps created by the ship to pierce the void. Morning was quite different. As I peered off the starboard side towards the aft as we made our way WNW I saw perhaps one of the most beautiful sunrises I’ve ever seen – and the photo doesn’t due it justice. Later, as I sat at breakfast gazing across the vast water that now surrounds us, the occasional whale in the distance would blow water and air out into the sky. And, simply by chance, I caught sight of 4-5 dolphins running with us. Truly, this morning was made for me.
