Photoshop CS6: Video QuickStart is Live!

June 21, 2012 in Graphic Design, News, Personal, Photography, Photoshop, Tutorials, Video

Photoshop CS6 Visual QuickStart GuideI am so excited to announce today that my new video series Photoshop CS6: Video QuickStart is now live on Peachpit.com! The series  is to accompany the new release of the Photoshop CS6: Visual QuickStart Guide book. Both are designed to help beginners get up to speed with Photoshop using CS6 and are great resources that take you through some Photoshop essentials and provide a good foundation for getting started with this powerful program.

The link above (which is an affiliate link, by the way, which means I will get a little something if you buy anything from Peachpit via the link) will take you to the book itself, but if you then go to Topics>Adobe Photoshop>Store (on the left, under the topic header) you can purchase the videos there and watch a sample chapter on Masks.

If you know anyone who wants to learn more about Photoshop and wants a great guidebook for all of its bells and whistles, please bring them to this page and have them use this link so they can get started learning today!

(Once I have it from Peachpit, I will share a sample video here as well.)

Big Things Are Happening

May 15, 2012 in Photoshop

While I can’t talk too much about it yet because the deal is still being worked out, but last week I got a very interesting direct message on Twitter that led to a few emails and eventually a really cool conference call about a project I should be starting next week.

What I can say is that I was contacted by a prominent book publisher who is going to be releasing a companion video series for a title slated for release sometime next month. They have asked me to record about a dozen 3-4min videos teaching beginners the essentials of Photoshop using CS6 – not necessarily teaching the latest features of CS6, just using that version as the platform and work environment as we explore what you need to do to get up and running with Photoshop.

Very Cool!

I’ve been producing Photoshop training videos on and off for a few years and have always gotten positive feedback from viewers – I even got an honorable mention from a NAPP training a couple of years back. I’ve been working on Season 2 of my graphic design podcast and have taught workshops and one-on-one sessions as well, so this sort of thing is right up my alley and I am so excited that they saw my work, liked my style, and thought of me for the project. I know it’s going to be a lot of work, but what a foot in the door! I can’t wait to get started and see what I can do to really make my mark on the project and further establish myself.

Don’t worry, I am told that I’ll have a couple of segments to share as promotional materials for myself so you can see what I’ve come up with.

Photoshopping and the Media – A Conversation with a High School Freshman

May 11, 2012 in Freelancing, Graphic Design, Interviews, Photography, Photoshop

Back in early April, I was approached by a high school freshman who was working on a paper about the role of Photoshop and photo manipulation in the media – both news and otherwise – and how that affects self-image in young people. I was, of course, glad to help out and below is how I responded to her questions about my views on the subject and how I make my own decisions with regards to Photoshop and image retouching. It’s kind of a stream of consciousness and could certainly be expanded upon, so please bear with my jumping around.

If you have any comments, please share them in the comments below!

Photoshop Toolbox: Guides

November 3, 2011 in Graphic Design, Photoshop, Photoshop Toolbox, Tutorials

Photoshop Toolbox - Beginner Tips for Photoshop

The Photoshop Toolbox is a regular series designed to help those who are still finding their way around Photoshop to learn some of the nuances of tools, layers, and other functions found in this powerful program.

On this edition of the Photoshop Toolbox we’re going to take a look at Guides in Photoshop. Guides are one of those little things that can be a huge help when laying out a new design. They can help you line up different elements, make sure elements are the same height/width so they fit within a row or column nicely, or they can be very useful when creating a new graphic so you can fit it all together.

The easiest way to create a new guide is to press Cmd/Ctrl+R to make your Rulers visible in your document window. Then, just click on the left-hand ruler and drag into your image to create a vertical guide. Do the same with the top ruler to create a horizontal guide. If you find that you need to reposition your guide(s), select the Move Tool (V) and hover over the desired guide until the cursor changes, then just click and drag to the new location. To remove a single guide, simply grab it and drag it all the way off the document window.

If you need your guides to be in a specific location – say, for margins or bleed areas or to locate the exact center of the document – go up to the menu and select View>New Guide. In the resulting dialog box, choose the orientation of your guide (vertical or horizontal) and type in the number and units (px, in, cm…) and click OK. If you still need to move your guides around, you can still do so using the Move Tool as we talk about above.

It’s easy to accidentally move your guides when using the Move Tool and clicking on an element located near one of your guides. Once you have the guides in place, go up to View>Lock Guides and they will remain in place until you choose to unlock them later on.

If you want to get an idea of what the design looks like without the clutter of the guides, you can temporarily hide them by hitting Cmd/Ctrl+H. When you are finished and no longer need your guides, or if you want to start fresh with your guides,  simply go up to the menu and select View>Clear Guides and you’re all set!

If there is a tool or feature in Photoshop that you’d like me to write about in the future, please leave a comment below or send me an email to askjason@jasondmoore.com.

Photoshop & Photography Community

April 7, 2010 in Personal, Photography, Photoshop

First off, I’d like to wish my beautiful wife, Kim, a very Happy Engagement Anniversary! In the wee hours of April 7, 2007 after returning home from Photoshop World in Boston, Kim surprised me at my apartment to welcome me home. We spent the next several hours talking and when I presented her with my grandmother’s wedding ring, she and I decided to spend the rest of our lives together. Now, 3 years later, we have a very happy marriage, a house, an awesome puppy, and our first little one on his way at anytime.

Thank you Kim, for loving me the way you do and for sharing this adventure with me! I am truly blessed! I Love You!

And now, on with the post…

(NOTE: This post was intended to be posted last week, but there was an error between the seat and the keyboard, later found to be an Id10-T problem, when scheduling. My apologies.)

Ever since I refocused my online presence towards Photoshop and digital photography back in 2006 with the Photoshop & Photography Blogroll, one of my main goals was to develop a community of creative people who would participate in projects and contests, offer tips and tutorials, and simply engage one another as we each develop our craft.
